International Guideline for Lasik Surgery

Nowadays Lasik is not a word that people used to hear rarely, it is the most frequently and commonly performed eye surgery with the help of lasers. LASIK is the short form of Laser assisted in situ Keratomileusis or laser eye surgery. This is an operation which is performed by an ophthalmologist who uses a Lasik Laser Technology to reshape the cornea in the eye in order to improve vision. The Lasik Surgeons worldwide strictly following the International guideline for Lasik surgery, which is not just one but a whole set of rules to be adhered for the future patient.

Patient Criteria Checklist for LASIK Laser Eye Surgery in Amritsar:  

  • Candidate must be above 18 years
  • Patient should have a stable glasses or contact lens prescription for minimal one year or more
  • Only if the visions are stable then only Lasik Surgery will be performed for the vision correction. In case patient’s eye glasses number is changing frequent in that case Lasik Surgery in not recommended.
  • In case of pregnancy or nursing mother, Lasik surgery is not recommended.
  • Lasik is not recommended to patients who participate in boxing, wrestling, martial arts or other activities in which blows to the face and eyes are a normal occurrence.
  • Patients should be free from some of the common diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatologic conditions glaucoma, cataract, Keratoconus and any eye disease and should have healthy retina, eye pressure & corneal thickness should be sufficient. As per International standard, a 250-μm residual stromal bed (RSB) is fairly accepted as the minimum tissue that must remain after Lasik Surgery; however, some surgeons have more conservative approach – prefers to keep 300
  • Dry Eyes tends to aggravate this condition after Lasik Surgery; therefore in such case one need to be very careful of refrain from Lasik Surgery.
  • In case patient has gone previously some refractive surgery (e.g., RK, PRK, LASIK), The decision to go for additional Lasik Surgery, one must be made in consultation with your doctor after careful consideration of previous refractive surgery.
  • Patient should not have any major eye diseases or disorder, no evidence of collagen vascular or autoimmune diseases, no recent history of an ocular (eye) herpes, eye infection or inflammation, excessive corneal disease/scarring or severely dry eyes.
  • Patient should have realistic vision expectations from LASIK eye surgery outcomes and willing to accept the potential surgical risks, procedural complications and visual side effects of LASIK surgery.
